Today, the name Abacija is often used for the entire riverside stretch between the City Bridge and the former Green Bridge. Historically, however, the name refers exclusively to the area along the right bank of the Vrbas immediately next to the City Bridge, in the Mejdan (Obilićevo) neighborhood, near Caffe Klub 22, formerly known as the 22. April Scouts Club. Before the Second World War, the famous Abacija tavern stood here, taking its name from the well-known Austro-Hungarian seaside resort of Abbazia, today’s Opatija.
Thanks to the convenient riverbank for mooring boats, this area was for decades the gathering place of Banja Luka's traditional dajak boatmen. Today's Dajak Pier proudly continues that tradition, preserving one of the most recognizable stories of the Vrbas River and the city of Banja Luka.
