Conditions for issuing a temporary residence permit

Temporary residence can be granted to a foreigner under the conditions that:

• He has proof that justifies the existence of a basis for the approval of temporary residence.

• He has the means to support himself.

• He has a medical certificate, issued no later than three months before the date of submission of the application, from which it is evident that he does not suffer from a disease that poses a threat to public health in BiH, excluding cases when the disease occurred outside of the approved first temporary stay in BiH.

• He has been provided with suitable accommodation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

• He has health insurance in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

• He has a passport with a validity period of at least three months longer than the period for which he is requesting temporary residence approval.

• There are no criminal proceedings against him and he has not been punished for criminal acts.


Temporary residence for humanitarian reasons may be granted to a foreigner who does not meet the stated conditions for residence approval in the following cases:

• If he is a victim of organized crime, i.e. human trafficking.

• A minor child of a foreigner if he is abandoned or a victim of organized crime, or for other reasons is left without parental protection, guardianship or unaccompanied.

• A person without citizenship.

• A foreigner for whom it is determined that his life or freedom would be threatened because of his race, religion, national affiliation, belonging to a certain social group, because of his political opinion or because he would be subjected to torture, punishment or some other form of inhuman and degrading treatment, when would be returned to the country of origin.

• For other justified humanitarian reasons.


Temporary residence based on family reunification can be granted to a foreigner under the conditions that:

• A citizen of BiH, i.e. a foreigner with an approved residence permit in BiH, has secured accommodation for himself and family members for whom he is applying for a residence permit based on family reunification, and has a permanent source of income, i.e. that he has sufficient means to support the person for whom he is applying in BiH.

• A citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, or a foreigner with an approved residence permit in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has health insurance for himself and his family members for whom he is requesting a residence permit based on family reunification.

• There are no reasons that exclude the authorization of residence, which refer to not having a medical certificate, a passport with a validity period of at least three months longer than the period for which the authorization is requested, criminal proceedings, punishment for a criminal offense, the presence of a foreigner who poses a threat to public order, or the security of BiH or represents a threat to public health, except when the illness occurred after an approved stay in BiH.
