The Church of the Holy Trinity was originally located in the center of Banja Luka, between the Banski Dvor and the municipal building of Banja Luka, where the Christ the Saviour Cathedral stands today. It was built between the two world wars, during the time of Ban Svetislav Tisa Milosavljević and Metropolitan Vasilije. Construction began in 1925, and it was ceremoniously opened in 1929. It was consecrated on Ascension Day, May 19, 1939.
During the German bombing on April 12, 1941, the church was hit, and the altar section (apse) was significantly damaged. In May of the same year, the Ustaše declared the church a "disgrace to the city" and ordered Serbs, Jews, and Roma to demolish it, brick by brick.

The Church of the Holy Trinity was rebuilt, but now at a new location in the Aleja Svetog Save in Banja Luka. It served as the cathedral of the Banja Luka Diocese from 1972 to 2009.
