The Parish of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located in the center of Banja Luka at Srpska Street 22, is one of the oldest and most significant Catholic parishes in the region. Its historical roots reach deep into the past - written records confirm the parish’s existence as early as 1503, while traces of earlier churches in the area point to an even older Christian tradition. Throughout the centuries the parish changed its seat several times, and the present church, built in 1891, was renovated multiple times after being damaged in earthquakes and wartime events. Despite many challenges, the parish has remained an active spiritual center, preserving the faith, history, and cultural heritage of the Catholic community of Banja Luka.

Over its long history, the parish has been home to numerous religious buildings, chapels, and cemeteries, and it was often located near important Franciscan monasteries such as Greben and Zvečaj. Within its territory stands the Cathedral of St. Bonaventure - today’s Banja Luka Cathedral - built after the devastating 1969 earthquake and solemnly consecrated in 2001. The parish has also given two bishops to the Catholic Church and has long been a center of many Catholic and Croatian cultural societies, choirs, sports clubs, and schools that helped shape the cultural and social life of the city.
The parish covers a large part of Banja Luka, including the settlements of Ducipolje and Rekavice, and remains an active spiritual center with a rich liturgical and pastoral life. Despite damage, wartime hardships, and numerous challenges throughout the 20th century, the parish has been preserved and restored thanks to the dedication of priests and believers. Its continuous work, deep historical roots, and strong connection to the local community make it one of the key religious and cultural foundations of Catholics in Banja Luka.
