The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is located in the city center, between the Banski Dvor and the municipal building of Banja Luka, on the same site and with the same dimensions as the original Church of the Holy Trinity. The church was built between the two world wars, during the tenure of Ban Svetislav Tisa Milosavljević and Metropolitan Vasilije. Construction lasted from 1925 to 1929, and it was solemnly consecrated on Ascension Day, May 19, 1939.

During the German bombing on April 12, 1941, the church was hit, and the altar section (apse) was significantly damaged. In May of the same year, the Ustaše declared the church a "disgrace to the city" and ordered Serbs, Jews, and Roma to demolish it brick by brick. After World War II, for a long time, the reconstruction of the church was not permitted, and instead, a Monument to Fallen Fighters was built on the site.
In the early 1990s, the Banja Luka Church Municipality received permission to rebuild the destroyed church, and construction began in 1993 when the church foundations were consecrated. The exterior construction work was completed on September 26, 2004, when the first liturgy was held. The church was fully rebuilt and ceremoniously consecrated on Ascension Day, May 28, 2009, under the name Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, as the Church of the Holy Trinity had been rebuilt at a new location in Aleja Svetog Save in Banja Luka.
The newly rebuilt cathedral is architecturally identical to the previous one and is the tallest religious building in Banja Luka, with a bell tower 47 meters high and a dome 22.5 meters high. The cathedral was built from red and yellow travertine stone, originating from Mesopotamia. The construction was done with three-layer walls: stone, reinforced concrete, and brick. The domes are covered with gold-plated stainless steel, imported from Siberia. The bells and clocks on the bell tower were installed by Austrian craftsmen. The clocks on all four sides of the bell tower are connected to a time regulation center in Frankfurt.
